Bladder Cancer – Health care A to Z

Summary

*The bladder is located in the lower abdomen and forms part of the urinary tract.
*Most start in the cells lining the bladder.
*The most common type is transitional cell cancer, which accounts for 90-95 % of .
*It does not tend to run in families, but the cells of certain individuals seem to be more susceptible to malignant change than others.
*The most common symptom of is blood in the urine.

Description

The bladder is located in the lower abdomen and forms part of the urinary tract. It is a hollow organ that stores urine. The two kidneys filter the blood and form urine, which is then passed down the ureters to the bladder for storage. The bladder has a strong muscular wall to allow it to expand and accommodate urine.

The inside of the hollow bladder is lined with specialised cells called transitional cell epithelium. During urination, the bladder muscle contracts and expels urine via the urethra.

Moststart in the cells lining the bladder. The most common type is transitional cell cancer, which accounts for 90-95 % of. Squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma account for the rest.

If the cancer is limited to the bladder lining only, it is called superficial. If it invades through the lining and into the muscle or beyond, then it is called invasive . Cancer cells may also spread via lymph channels to the lymph nodes, or via the bloodstream to distant organs like the lungs or bone. When this happens, it is called metastatic bladder cancer.

Causes

The exact cause of bladder cancer is not known. Research is being done to try and identify a gene which may increase the risk of developing bladder cancer. Certainly cells of certain individuals seem to be more susceptible to malignant change than other individuals. Several potential carcinogens have been identified, and are believed to be excreted into the urine, where they act on the lining of the bladder, eventually causing tumour formation. The time period between exposure and cancer may be as long as 20 years.

A risk factor is anything which may increase the chances of getting a cancer, but which does not directly cause it.

Smoking

This is by far the biggest risk factor. Cigarette smokers have a two to fourfold increased risk of bladder cancer, compared to non-smokers. The risk persists for about 10 years after cessation of smoking. Pipe and cigar smokers are also at increased risk.

Industrial chemicals

Exposure to certain chemicals, especially aromatic amines, has been linked with bladder cancer. These chemicals are used in the dye, rubber, textile, paint and printing industries.

Chronic bladder inflammation

Recurrent infection, stones, and indwelling catheters have all been linked to bladder cancer – especially squamous carcinoma. Chronic infection with Schistosoma haematobium (bilharzia) may also predispose to bladder cancer.

Should You Be Screened for Oral Cancer?

How do you know if you have oral cancer? As many as 37,000 Americans may have this disease at this very moment and have no idea about it. Eventually it develops into a hard to ignore lesion on the inside of the mouth or throat which is very painful and discolored, but in the early stages these lumps can be small and unnoticeable. And before that stage it will start as a few cancerous cells which are invisible to the naked eye. The only way to catch the disease at this stage is through an oral cancer screening.

It is true that oral cancers may be found through a regular visual examination of the mouth. The dentist will be able to spot potentially cancerous lumps by sight or touch. But this can only be done once the oral cancer progresses to a certain stage. In this stage the cancer has already had time to grow and worsen, and the sooner the cancer is detected the easier it is to treat. The oral cancer screening tests were made to help identify cancerous and precancerous cells that would not otherwise be found during a normal visual exam. It would be difficult to see these precancerous and cancerous cells without the help of the screening tests.

There is some debate on whether it is medically necessary for patients to undergo a screening test. Some argue that because data has been inconclusive as to whether this procedure gives a significant advantage to the patient, it could be better to wait until the dentist can identify the cancer with a regular visual exam.
But why would you want to take the risk? The data has been so far inconclusive because studies have been focused on the immense level of efficiency that the screenings have, and not whether it is safe to wait until cancer can be detected visually. It is common knowledge that the earlier a cancer, or any disease for that matter, is detected then the sooner a patient can begin treatment. If treatment is given early, the risk of the cancer metastasizing (spreading to other areas of the body) is decreased significantly. If found at the earliest stages, oral cancer has a high survivability rate. According to the National Cancer Institute, “When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread.”

Many people will still wonder if it is necessary for them to undergo screening. Risk of developing oral cancer increases depending on lifestyle choices of the patient. Smoking and smokeless tobacco are the most frequent causes of the disease. If you are a tobacco user it is absolutely necessary to be tested regularly, to catch cancers in their earliest stages. Alcohol consumption is also a major risk factor for developing cancer, and the risks can be compounded if you are both a tobacco user and a user of alcohol.

Even if you do not smoke, chew tobacco, or drink you may still be at risk for developing cancer. A less common risk factor for developing oral cancer is a recent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, or HSCT. But for those of us who do not fall under any of these categories there is still the risk of developing cancer through genealogical factors and exposure to the increasingly common Human Papillomavirus which is more often known as HPV. If you are at risk of developing oral HPV, there is a significant danger of you developing oral cancer. Men are also more likely to develop cancer, especially those older than 40.

The dangers of waiting for cancers to develop into later stages are numerous and devastating. If oral cancer is not treated quickly, potential consequences include removal of the tongue, removal of the lower jaw, and radical neck dissection. If left untreated long enough oral cancers can even be fatal. Don’t wait to see a dentist until you think you may have oral cancer. The cancer screening systems are for people who are showing no symptoms of cancer.

Detecting Breast Cancer to Save a Life

When thinking about the people in life that we love the most; that we try hardest to protect and that we’d be lost without, we tend to think of the women in our lives. It is our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, wives, daughters and other special women that we feel the most protective over. Unfortunately, they are also the people most likely to be diagnosed withe breast cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Luckily, breast cancer does not have to be a life sentence. Detecting it early equals a greater chance of survival. Cancer in the breast can be detected by self breast exams (SBE), clinical breast exams (CBE) and mammograms. Taking the time to learn about breast cancer and informing others can help save a life of the people we love.

Self breast exams should be done monthly after the woman’s menstrual cycle. There are several steps to performing a SBE.

  • First, without a shirt or bra on, a woman should examine her breasts in the mirror looking for warning signals such as lumps, dimpling, discharge or any other sudden changes in the appearance of the breast. Continue looking at the breasts with both arms above the head.
  • Second, lying down with the right arm overhead, use the three middle fingers of the left hand to feel around the right breast. Starting at the nipple and moving outward, make circular motions around the breast using light pressure, then medium pressure and hard pressure. Next, using the same fingers, feel the breast in lines going up and down the breast from the nipple. Switch the arm and the hand and redo the steps on the left breast.

Although doing SBE’s is not the recommended method for finding breast cancer, it is highly important in helping women know what is normal for their breast and their body while helping to spot any changes.

To assist in early detection, women over 20 are also encouraged to get clinical breast exams (CBE) by their doctor every three years and every year after age 40. The process of a CBE is much like that of a SBE only it is done by a trained medical professional.

  • While self breast exams and clinical breast exams are important factors in detecting breast cancer, the most effective tool is a mammogram. Mammograms are recommended yearly for women over 40.

The best detection method is to use all three of this exams together as recommended.

While early detection is helpful to survive breast cancer, there are also steps that can be taken to prevent it. A person can help to prevent breast cancer by limiting alcohol consumption to 1 drink a day, exercising regularly, knowing their body and knowing their family history.

How to heal cancer

When one asks how to heal cancer? This is a big question and healing cancer is not as difficult as many perceive, but there is a problem or dilemma. The problem is one of a lack of correct information and a plethora of misinformation. The view of the questioner who asks “How to heal cancer” is important. If they are in the majority then they probably see cancer as something foreign to them and then they want something to fight, kill and destroy the enemy (the cancer). To these people I can only say, I can’t show you how to heal cancer unless you first be prepared to let go of all your perceptions about cancer and start from the position that you know nothing about it and that you have a goal to be healthy.

Cancer is a word, a noun and to do an action to a noun, then you have to know what it is. For example, to know how to sit on a chair, you have to know what a chair is and you have to know what sit means.

How to heal cancer?

  • First we’ll look at the word heal. All living things have the ability to self heal and all healing is self healing, we can get assistance and help our self healing system but it us and our cells that do the healing. Only our cells have the ability to heal. So when we heal we are healing ourselves. The self healing system is working continuously, and we can be of enormous help by removing what is slowing down or preventing the self healing system, doing its job effectively.
  • Now we will look at cancer. You may see cancer as an enemy, something that you have got but what do you know about it? Can you articulate and describe it fully? You may call it a disease and then think of something like measles and if you kill the measles virus then you will regain health. But Cancer cells are your own cells, not foreign bodies and the body supports the cancer, clearly there is much, much more to know. Your cancer cells are doing something and though the mainstream may see it as they are rogue or defective cells, this is ignorance. Cancer cells are wound healing cells, they are healing cells, healing wounds, stress and irritants. We can use the overriding general term stress. Stress is anything that is damaging to the body (body includes our minds and everything that is us).

So I am proposing that cancer is the healing system in action and though many die from cancer, they are more correctly dying from the side effects and collateral damage of the reaction between the healing system and whatever the particular stress is. Now the healing cells (cancer cells) are quite capable of healing the stress. So what is going wrong here? What is going wrong, is that the stress is continuing! The stress could be physical, nutritional or emotional. If the stress is continually occurring then the healing is continually occurring but with no end. This is cancer. To be healthy, you need to stop the stress from occurring. The self healing system will then stop trying to heal the now nonexistent stress and the body will return to health.

Back to the title – how do you heal cancer? Answer – you don’t for there is nothing wrong with the cancer (healing) process, you heal you or more correctly, you heal your life.

What is Skin Cancer and How to Be Aware

One of the most common cancers, if not the most common, is skin cancer. Past research has indicated that approximately one in six people will develop skin cancer. Hopefully this number will decrease as individuals become aware and educated in the techniques of preventing skin cancer. The main cause of skin cancer is too much sun. Other factors that can contribute to the risk of skin cancer are sunburn with blistering especially during childhood, skin creams that contain tar if used over a prolonged period, repeated X-rays, exposure to coal and arsenic, radiation, chemotherapy and family history. Individuals that have fair skin or a lot of freckles can also increase the risk.

In most cases skin cancer grows slowly. You need to be constantly checking your skin for any signs of skin cancer or anything unusual. To check your whole body, you can stand in front of a full length mirror and with a hand held mirror check out every inch of your skin. You should also have someone check the top of your head as well. Also if you wear nail polish you should remove it occasionally to see if there are any unusual marks or growths under your nails. You should become aware of your body in full detail so that when something bad pops up you can notice it immediately.

You should look for unusual spots, lesions, moles or spots that are asymmetrical in shape. You should also look for any colored spot that grows bigger or develops an uneven color or irregular, ragged edge. Other indications of skin cancer can be any nodules or patches that are red and scaly. Even more symptoms include changes in the surface of a mole. You should look for a mole is raised above the skin and has a rough surface, is scaly, oozing, bleeding or there is development of bumps on any mole. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should seek medical attention..

One good thing to note is that skin cancer has a high cure rate if caught early unlike some other cancers. Self examination is the key to early detection with a regular visit to your doctor for checkups.

As far as prevention goes, the best thing that you can do is to avoid the sun for long periods of time. You should definitely try to avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you are going to be out in the sun, you need to put on a high SPF sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to going out in the sun. You need to ensure that you apply it to all of that areas of your body that are not covered by clothes. A couple of places that are easily forgotten are your ears, top of your head, and the tops of your feet.
You should also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and make sure they protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts as well. Wear long sleeve shirts and pants if it is not sweltering hot, to better protect your body. You should also consider a good hat. One last tip is you should avoid tanning salons as they can damage your skin just like the sun.
Cheap hgh Mexico
One point to remember is that some limited amount of sun can be beneficial to you in regards to Vitamin D deficiency. You may want to get some sun in a limited amount each day but the key is a limited amount and not for an extended period. You should consult with your doctor about how much sunlight you should get. Your doctor can also prescribe Vitamin D supplements to you. Of course there is the controversy that you need some sun in order NOT to be vitamin D deficient.
It is not always easy to avoid the sun but just try to limit your exposure, wear a good sunscreen and check your body periodically to help keep you safe from skin cancer.
